Fool Contrived
I don’t know what drove you
From the world you did finally create
But as you tried to cast off your demons
You caught me by mistake
The air you sweetly adorned
I devoured every draught
And choked myself in my own making
Trampling on the coals of my craft
The loner can’t find the village that holds you
The lover won’t hear the vows that bind you
The martyr gives up everything to feel you
And the fool thinks it was somehow contrived
The writing was all there on the wall
But I didn’t make a fire in that cave
Instead I took everything that would burn
And tried to make the sun my slave
Now they’ve all got you cradled
Safely back into their arms
And I’m sure you’re better off anyway
All I could give you is harm
Refrain
Break
I feel the sky a callin’
As I ponder my escape
Though I’m not sure I could still fly outta here
The moths have gotten to my cape
Refrain
